Human Resource Policies: Concealed and Open Carry Weapons

Employers should be prepared to address guns with clearly stated HR Policies that address weapons, including concealed and open carry. Businesses that do not have these HR policies open themselves up to potential liability if something negative occurs.

This kind of HR policy aims to establish guidelines and procedures for employees and visitors regarding possessing and carrying firearms and other weapons on company property to maintain a safe and secure working environment. It applies to all employees, contractors, vendors, and visitors on company premises and at company-sponsored events.

Definitions

Open Carry: The practice of visibly carrying a firearm or other weapon on one’s person in public.

Concealed Carry: The practice of carrying a firearm or other weapon concealed, either on one person or in close proximity.

Company Property: Includes all property owned, leased, or otherwise controlled by the company, including buildings, parking lots, and vehicles.
