Workers’ Compensation Overview
Objective:
The participant will become familiar with the statutory Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation for most state-funded and self-insured employers and learn how premiums are calculated.
Process:
- Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation for state-funded employers
- Involved parties & roles: BWC, MCO, TPA, and Employer
- Types of claims: Medical only, Lost time, Restricted work, Living maintenance, Transitional work, etc.
- Claim costs – direct & indirect
- Reserves (Micro Insurance Reserving Analysis system (MIRA)
- Base, experience and group ratings
- Premium calculations
- Claims Processing and hearings
- Cost control methods
Outcome:
The participant will be able to effectively administer claims and participate in the hearing process. Additionally, participants will understand and utilize various cost-control methods such as effective safety practices, return-to-work, salary continuation, fraud detection, settlements, discount programs, handicap reimbursements, safety grants, retrospective rating, etc.
